GENDER VIOLENCE IN CABO VERDE
BRIEF
The European partnership for democracy (EPD) commissioned a survey in Cabo Verde to determine the ability of local government institutions to aid victims of gender-based violence. We were tasked with weaving the data from this survey into a visual narrative that would form a one-page long-form story. The page would include infographics that presented the results of the survey as well as imagery that portray the challenges but also the positive outcomes of the work done by civil society organisations in the region. The final version would be published in Portuguese to ensure it is accessible to the people most affected and most able to bring about positive change. Target Audience: Decision makers of Cabo Verde Activists and social workers who work in the sector

LAYOUT
From Miro to Webflow
The survey highlighted a specific journey through bureaucracy that a victim would have to follow to get their rights. While there were some glaring challenges at each stage, there was always a ray of hope at the end. I wanted to start the journey by showing the challenges but end it with solutions and positive outcomes despite going through a difficult journey. This is highlighted by the flowchart like layout where over half of the victims return back to their lives of struggle because they don’t receive the help they need in the beginning. The layout was created in the online platform Miro using google images and wireframe structures.
Design
Based on this layout, Piero finished the design in Figma. He used Midjourney to curate AI images with a consistent west african painting style and colour palette throughout the site. He even created the colour styles of oranges and blues from these images. He also created 3 types of charts that illuminated the survey which had very basic yes/no replies. Once designed on Figma with different breakpoints, I developed the site on Webflow, a no-code platform allowing for the pixel perfect transfer of the Figma designs Finally we delivered the html, js and css files to our clients, EPD.
It was a pleasure working with the EPD team on this worthy project. I am excited for people to read it and learn the necessary lessons that can improve the state of government services for victims of gender-based violence.
